Our body is our temple. Like a garden that is depended on for sustenance, our bodies must be cultivated, maintained and well cared for in order to function properly over time.
Establishing a consistent yoga practice will help to ensure ease of movement as we grow older. When we are born, our bodies are filled with fluid, liquid connective tissues called ground substance. Without regular activity, moisture in the ground substance is lost and the natural fluidity begins to congeal, reducing our flexibility and ability to move. Practicing yoga will keep us supple, agile and feeling strong.
Yoga is also clinically proven to reduce stress, increase energy levels and improve overall health and well-being. The busy, stressful lifestyles we lead can cause a great deal of mental and emotional imbalance which, in turn, releases toxins that pollute our bodies. Practicing yoga increases the circulation of blood flow and clears our inner channels for energy to move freely and uninterrupted, cleansing the body. This is why after a strong, focused and mindful practice we often leave class with a feeling of lightness and vitality. We have infused dense matter with vibrant energy, creating space for new life to occur.
In addition to increasing physical strength and stamina, a committed yoga practice builds mental strength, self-confidence and self-reliance. It encourages self-discipline, stimulates clarity of thought and can help to bring our emotions under control. Most importantly however, yoga shows us how to still the turbulent movements and fluctuations of the mind and bring us back to our natural state of calm and self-awareness.
