Benefits of Integrating Yoga into the Workplace

A quarter of a century ago, The Surgeon General issued a warning stating inactivity was as big a health risk as smoking cigarettes. “Despite strong evidence supporting the benefits of regular physical activity, 2/3 of the industrialized world may not meet minimum physical activity standards. This physical inactivity constitutes a major public health concern with related social and economic costs. A recent Health Canada initiative identified the workplace as a key setting for encouraging physical activity adoption and maintenance in the adult population. The workplace is a good place to promote physical activity for several reasons (its established channels of communication and existing support networks). Workplaces also develop corporate norms of behavior.” (Alberta Centre for Active Living)

Work environments are not always conducive to a healthy body or mind. Office conditions generally involve long hours sitting at a desk staring at a computer screen under strong overhead lighting without natural ventilation. This type of stress on our bodies can lead to tension in the shoulders, neck, wrists and low back. On the other hand, retail or customer service type work can involve long hours standing in one position, which can also cause a number of stressors on the body and mind.

Integrating yoga into the workplace can counterbalance work related physical and emotional stress and help employees develop new patterns that will transform the workplace into a safe and balanced environment, increasing overall effectiveness in the workplace.  Click here for
